I've been working over the last three months on a remix of the Beatles' song, Strawberry Fields Forever (SFF). It is amazing how much music is on this single track. My purpose was to utilize digital editing software to deconstruct this important work and reassemble it in a way to highlight some of the less easily heard passages, as well as generally explore the remixing possibilities. Starting from the Magical Mystery Tour CD, I used a Power Mac G4 running Peak 3.5 and Waves 4.0. In the digital domain it is possible to tremendously amplify audio signals without incurring the usual noise problems associated with audio amplifiers. It is also possible to take the difference channel (left subtracted from right) to isolate voices or instruments. Strawberry Fields was originally mixed with vocals and instruments usually placed in a single channel, thus facilitating track isolation. I applied these and other techniques to collect samples from the fade-outs and fade-ins of Strawberry Fields. While some sections of the song were too distorted for use on the remix (e.g., John’s famous statement “I buried Paul”) I was able to collect a number of interesting samples. One of the more suprising discoveries along the way was a point toward the end of the song where John can be heard saying “fuck”. It is also possible to hear him counting time during instrumental passages.

The resulting remixed Strawberry Fields is leaner (minus the horn section) and definitely rocks harder than the original version. The remix is familiar in many ways but with enough rescued material that (to my ears) it sounds as if a long-lost recording of The Beatles had been discovered and brought to light.
